Edun Hails Adeniyi, Says Customs Contribution Crucial For Actualising N49trn 2025 Budget

Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, has praised the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) under the leadership of Comptroller-General Wale Adeniyi for its significant contribution to the country’s economic recovery. Edun made the remarks during the 61st quarterly board meeting of the NCS at the Customs House, Maitama, Abuja.

Edun emphasized the NCS’s critical role in achieving the federal government’s ₦49 trillion expenditure target for the 2025 fiscal year, which includes a projected revenue of ₦35 trillion. He particularly commended the agency’s outstanding performance, noting that by November 2024, the NCS had already generated over ₦5 trillion in revenue.

“The NCS and other revenue bodies have performed remarkably well,” Edun said, attributing the agency’s success to the reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He further highlighted that the NCS’s work in suppressing smuggling and facilitating trade has been vital for Nigeria’s economic growth and job creation.

The finance minister also shared that the government intends to secure concessionary loans, grants, and development support to cover the remaining ₦13 trillion needed to fund the 2025 budget. Additionally, Edun announced that the board had approved the recruitment of 3,927 new officers and granted special promotions to top-performing personnel in a bid to enhance efficiency and trade facilitation.

In closing, Edun urged Customs officers to stay committed to the nation’s economic goals, underscoring the agency’s essential role in poverty reduction and the overall growth of Nigeria’s economy.
