Nigeria Seeks UN Investigation into Boko Haram Funding, Hints at Global Conspiracy
General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has raised serious concerns over the continued financial support and international assistance that have sustained Boko Haram and other militant groups in Nigeria for more than 15 years.
In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, which was monitored by our correspondent, General Musa urged the United Nations (UN) to investigate the funding sources and resources that have enabled these insurgents to destabilize the country. He pointed out that many of the Boko Haram members who had surrendered were found in possession of significant amounts of foreign currency.
“We’ve reached out to international communities to help uncover the funding sources. Currently, over 120,000 Boko Haram fighters have surrendered, and many of them came with foreign currency. How did they get it? Where is the funding coming from? How did they get trained and acquire weapons?” General Musa asked.
He further emphasized that only the UN has the authority and resources to trace and investigate the international financial flows supporting Boko Haram’s activities. “The UN’s involvement is crucial because we need to track this funding. It’s an international issue, and we don’t have control over it here in Nigeria,” he explained.
The Defence Chief also suggested that there may be a global conspiracy behind the insurgency. “Could there be an international conspiracy? Who knows? How have they managed to sustain themselves for 15 years? That’s a question that everyone should be asking,” he said.
During a recent visit to frontline units of Operation Safe Haven in Kaduna and Plateau states, General Musa expressed optimism that the security situation would improve in 2025, acknowledging that 2024 had been a difficult year. He also called for renewed energy and determination in the fight against terrorism in the new year.
