Police Arraign Lagos Teacher Over Alleged Assault of 3-Year-Old Pupil
On Thursday, the Nigerian Police arraigned a female teacher, Stella Nwadigbo, from Christ Mitot School in Ikorodu, before a Chief Magistrate Court in Ogba, Lagos, for the alleged assault of a 3-year-old pupil, resulting in grievous bodily harm.
Nwadigbo was accused of assaulting the toddler, Abayomi Michael, on January 7, within the school premises. The incident was captured in a viral video that sparked public outrage, showing Nwadigbo slapping and punching the young boy while attempting to teach him how to write numerals.
Police prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem, informed Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu that the teacher’s actions violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. In response, Nwadigbo pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Kushanu granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000 with two sureties of equal value. She adjourned the case to February 18 for mention and ordered that Nwadigbo be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre until her bail terms were met.
In the wake of the incident, the school’s management suspended Nwadigbo, and reports indicate that Abayomi Michael was hospitalized due to the injuries sustained from the assault.
