Billionaire Okoya’s Son Raheem Apologises For ‘Naira Abuse’, Says Intentions Pure, Naive

Raheem Okoya, the son of Nigerian billionaire businessman and industrialist Chief Razaq Akanni Okoya, has issued a public apology following backlash over a viral video in which he and his brother, Wahab Okoya, were seen displaying and spraying bundles of N1,000 banknotes while dancing to music.

The video, which showed the brothers in agbada outfits, attracted widespread criticism, leading the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to describe the actions as “abuse” of the Naira. In the video, the Okoya brothers were seen tossing the notes into the air, with a police officer in uniform holding the cash. The incident sparked outrage, with many questioning the responsibility of wealthy individuals and the potential consequences for the Okoya brothers.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Raheem Okoya expressed regret for his actions and apologized to the Nigerian public. He explained, “To the Nigerian people, my actions were not to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support in this situation, as I had no intention to raise such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”

The video was reportedly made to promote Raheem’s new song, ‘Credit Alert,’ but its content stirred public outrage, questioning whether such displays of wealth were appropriate given the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. There was also skepticism about whether the Okoya brothers, given their prominent family background, would face any legal or disciplinary actions.

The Nigeria Police Force, however, confirmed that the officer who appeared in the video was detained for his involvement. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, took to X on Friday to announce that the officer had been identified and was undergoing disciplinary action for unethical behavior. He condemned the officer’s actions, stressing that the police would continue to uphold its core values and the sanctity of the nation’s currency.

While the police have taken swift action against their officer, there has been no official communication regarding whether the Okoya brothers will face any legal or disciplinary consequences for their actions.
