Opposition Lawmakers Coalition Celebrates Azuta-Mbata’s Appointment as Ohanaeze President

Urges him to use his position to foster unity and advance Igbos’ emancipation

The Opposition Lawmakers Coalition has congratulated Senator John Azuta-Mbata on his appointment as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the leading Igbo socio-cultural organization.

Azuta-Mbata, a former Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District, was selected on Friday during the election of new executives for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu.

In a statement signed by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the coalition expressed confidence in Azuta-Mbata’s ability to use his new role to further the cause of the Igbo people, urging him to work toward building more bridges for the empowerment and progress of the Igbo race.

The coalition described Azuta-Mbata’s emergence as a historic milestone for the organization, noting that his background as a former senator from Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, symbolizes the unity of Igbos, regardless of where they reside in the country.

“We, the Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, congratulate Senator John Azuta-Mbata on his appointment as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. We are confident that his vast experience, having served as a senator for Rivers East from 1999 to 2007, will be invaluable in his new position,” the statement read.

“We believe that Senator Azuta-Mbata’s appointment is historic, as it highlights the unity of the Igbo people, regardless of regional boundaries. His leadership offers an opportunity to advance the cause of the Igbo race and ensure they take their rightful place in the national framework,” they added.

The coalition also acknowledged the progress made in rebuilding, reconciling, and rehabilitating the Igbo nation since 1970. However, they emphasized that Igbos have not yet achieved their full potential and expressed hope that Azuta-Mbata’s leadership would bring the Igbo people closer together to foster peace, unity, and national progress.

As a former lawmaker, the coalition believes that Azuta-Mbata’s experience in the legislature will be crucial in his advocacy for the Igbo people, particularly through lobbying efforts aimed at advancing their interests at the national level.

“We offer our unwavering support to Senator John Azuta-Mbata as he embarks on this significant task of leading Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. We are confident that under his leadership, the Igbo people will continue to make strides toward greater national recognition,” the statement concluded.
