Irate Mob Sets Murder Suspect’s Home Ablaze In Akwa Ibom
The brutal murder of a 25-year-old businessman from Cameroon, Asahaowo Otobong Okon, has ignited violence in the Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The incident, which took place on January 2, 2025, has led to heightened tensions in the area, with an irate mob setting fire to the home of one of the suspects.
According to reports, Okon had returned to Nigeria for the Christmas and New Year holidays when he was allegedly attacked by two individuals suspected to be cultists. The altercation occurred in Obio Ndot, an agrarian community in Oruk Anam LGA, during a heated argument at a local drinking joint. The situation escalated quickly into a physical confrontation, and the victim was severely beaten into a coma. Despite efforts to revive him, Okon was confirmed dead at the hospital.
In retaliation, angry youths from the victim’s community, Nnung Ikot Okusung, set fire to the home of one of the suspects, who is currently on the run. The violent act has caused widespread panic, with local residents and shop owners fleeing the area in fear of being implicated in the aftermath or targeted by security forces.
A senior police officer from the Oruk Anam Police Division, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible for the crime. Security forces are reportedly working to maintain order and prevent further unrest in the community.
