IGP Advocates Removal of Police from Envelope Budgetary System
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to be removed from the envelope budgetary system, arguing that this move would enhance the Force’s operational efficiency.
Egbetokun made the call while defending the NPF’s 2025 budget before the Joint National Assembly Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday.
In his presentation, the IGP stressed the importance of adopting a more flexible budget structure, noting that removing the NPF from the envelope budgetary regime would allow for more accurate funding projections. “This adjustment would enable greater flexibility and ensure the availability of funds to manage the Force more effectively,” Egbetokun explained.
The IGP further proposed the creation of a special operations account dedicated exclusively to national security emergencies. He also called for an increase in the allocations for overheads and capital expenditures to better equip and modernize the Force.
As part of his budgetary recommendations, the IGP requested funding for the construction of five new zonal police headquarters and additional tactical units to enhance the country’s internal security framework. He also highlighted the need for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions to foster capacity building within the Force.
Additionally, Egbetokun emphasized that the prompt and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 would be critical to the successful implementation of the Force’s operations.
The IGP was accompanied by senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force during the budget defense session.
