Gov Ododo Pledges Comprehensive Reforms in Kogi Primary Healthcare System
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has unveiled a series of reforms aimed at transforming the state’s primary healthcare system to provide high-quality, accessible health services for all residents.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement on primary healthcare revitalisation held in Lokoja, the state capital, Governor Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, announced the introduction of periodic spot checks on all Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state. This initiative, led by the Primary Healthcare Task Force in collaboration with local government authorities and traditional rulers, aims to ensure accountability, improve coordination, and elevate the standards of services at PHCs.
Focus on Accountability and Service Delivery
Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services in the state, highlighting the pivotal role of PHCs in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, increasing immunisation coverage, and promoting the importance of primary healthcare within the broader healthcare value chain.
“Our administration is determined to address the challenges in the primary healthcare system and ensure better health outcomes for our citizens. This will be achieved through improved data collection and adherence to best practices in case management across all PHCs,” the Governor said.
He further acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, expressing gratitude for the federal government’s backing, which has been crucial in advancing healthcare reforms at the state level.
Strengthening Primary Healthcare Infrastructure
In his speech, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, the State Commissioner for Health, provided updates on the state’s efforts, revealing that at least one operational PHC exists in each of the state’s 239 wards, with adequate funding allocated for their operation. Additionally, plans are in place to increase the number of fully functional PHCs across the state to improve service access.
Royal Support for Healthcare Improvements
The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, His Royal Majesty, Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, commended the Ministry of Health for its tireless work in enhancing primary healthcare delivery in the state. He assured the continued support of traditional rulers in monitoring and supervising the operations of PHCs to ensure service standards are consistently maintained.
Looking Forward
Governor Ododo’s efforts reflect a strong commitment to strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in Kogi State. With focused reforms, improved coordination, and ongoing collaboration with traditional and community leaders, the administration aims to ensure that Kogi’s primary healthcare system meets the growing health needs of its people.
