Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road for Completion in 14 Months – Federal Gov’t

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the much-awaited Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway within the next 14 months. This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an inspection visit to the project site in Tafa, Niger State, on Thursday evening.

Revised Completion Timeline

Idris, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, stressed the government’s resolve to deliver this critical road infrastructure project on time. The road, a vital link between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kano, as well as several other states, has been under construction for years, with repeated delays hindering progress.

The visit was attended by several key officials, including Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works; Senator Mpigi Barinada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works; Hon. Akinola Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works; and other senior government figures.

Challenges and Project Revocation

Idris explained that the initial contract for the road, awarded to Julius Berger Plc, had been revoked due to prolonged delays and escalating costs. According to the Minister, Julius Berger had proposed a revised timeline of three years, along with an increased budget that escalated from N797 billion to N1.5 trillion, which the government found unacceptable.

In light of these issues, the project has been reassigned to a more efficient contractor. The road has also been divided into three sections to speed up construction and ensure its timely completion.

President Tinubu is determined to ensure the completion of this road,” Idris said. “He will not allow any contractor to hold us to ransom. This project will be delivered within the revised 14-month timeline.”

Key Features and Funding

In his remarks, Senator Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, provided further details, announcing the approval of a contract sum of N252.89 billion by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) for the project’s continuation.

The road project also includes key upgrades:

  • 10.6 kilometers of road leading to Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
  • An additional 5 kilometers extending towards Kogi State.
  • Full solar light installation to ensure safety and functionality, especially in remote sections of the road.

Umahi emphasized that the road is also being prepared for future concession under an operation and maintenance model, which would ensure sustainability and reduce the burden on the government.

“We are confident that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will ratify the project at its next sitting,” Umahi said, reinforcing the government’s focus on delivering world-class infrastructure for the Nigerian people.

Implications of the Project

The completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway is expected to have a significant positive impact on transportation, economic activities, and safety. The road serves as a vital artery linking several major cities, boosting connectivity and facilitating trade and travel across the northern region.

President Tinubu’s administration is determined to ensure that the road is completed within the newly set timeline, ensuring long-term benefits for the people and contributing to the economic growth of the region.
