Man in Court for Alleged Threat on Life of Ekiti Catholic Bishop
Victor Akande, a 24-year-old man, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti for allegedly threatening the life of Most Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese.
Akande, who was arraigned by the Ekiti State Police Command, is accused of committing the offence on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, around 8:30 pm at the Bishop’s Court.
The Charge
According to the charge, Akande threatened the life of Bishop Ajakaye and conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace. The offences are said to be contrary to Sections 46 and 181(1)(d) of the Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.
The charge reads:
“That you, Akande Victor, on 15th January 2025 at 8:30 pm, at the Bishop’s Court, did threaten the life of Ekiti Catholic Bishop, Most Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, and also on the same day, time and aforementioned place, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace.”
Akande pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him in court.
Court Proceedings
The Police prosecutor, Bamikole Olasunkanmi, requested the court to set a date for the prosecution’s witnesses to testify. He stated that he intended to call three witnesses to support the case.
However, Akande’s counsel, Mr. Opeyemi Esan, informed the court that the bishop, though represented by a priest in court, had pardoned Akande but recommended that he undergo rehabilitation. Esan urged the court to grant Akande bail on liberal terms.
Ruling on Bail
Magistrate Adefunke Anoma ruled that there was no evidence before the court that could warrant the charge to be struck out. However, she granted bail to Akande in the sum of N10,000, with one surety in like sum. The surety must swear to an affidavit of means and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
Magistrate Anoma adjourned the case to January 28, 2025, for either a report of settlement or further hearing.

The case is likely to attract attention, especially in light of the religious and social implications of threatening a prominent figure such as Bishop Ajakaye. The outcome of the ongoing proceedings will be eagerly watched, as the court explores both legal and restorative aspects of the matter.
