Body of Drowned Varsity Student Found, Recovered in Ekiti
The body of one of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) students who was feared to have drowned at Ero Dam in Ikun Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area, was recovered on Sunday evening, following days of an intensive search.
The missing students, identified as Oluwatobiloba Osho and Oladimeji Victor, both undergraduates in the Department of Theatre Arts at EKSU, were reported to have drowned while swimming in the river last weekend. The two students, along with their colleagues and their supervisor, had gone to Igogo Ekiti, a neighboring community, for research work and rehearsals.
After the research assignment concluded, the two students decided to stay behind while their supervisor and the rest of the team left the area. They reportedly went to the dam for sightseeing, but it was later discovered that they had gone missing, sparking fears that they had drowned.
SP Sunday Abutu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ekiti State Command, confirmed that the body of Oluwatobiloba Osho was found floating on the water at about 6:00 PM on Sunday. The body was immediately recovered and taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti for an autopsy.
Abutu also indicated that efforts were still ongoing to locate the body of the second student, Oladimeji Victor. Search teams, which included police rescue teams and local fishermen, had been scouring the dam and its surrounding areas for days, following the initial report that the two students had gone missing.
This tragic incident has cast a shadow over the Ekiti State University community, with both students remembered by their colleagues and faculty. The police have promised continued efforts to determine the exact cause of the deaths and to ensure proper procedures are followed during the investigation.
