NAF Denies Responsibility for NNPC Wellhead Explosion in Rivers — Spokesman

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has rejected claims that it was responsible for the recent explosion at the NNPC wellhead in Buguma Community, located in the Asari-Toru local government area of Rivers State.

In a statement responding to allegations from the Buguma Community, NAF spokesman Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Olusola Akinboyewa dismissed suggestions that the explosion was caused by outdated oil infrastructure, illegal oil bunkering, or NAF operations.

“The NAF categorically denies these false and baseless claims,” Akinboyewa said. “We urge media organizations to exercise caution and verify facts before publishing, rather than relying on unfounded assumptions.”

He further explained that the wellhead had been leaking crude oil for a prolonged period, a result of ongoing illegal activities in the area.

“Previous mission recordings confirm that the wellhead had been leaking oil for some time, leading to the accumulation of gas and flammable liquids in the vicinity. High-definition video footage from NAF surveillance platforms, including recordings from December 2024, clearly show the wellhead releasing oil, with the barge already burnt before our arrival at the location.”

The spokesman emphasized that NAF’s onboard camera systems provide transparency and accountability, capturing all operations and preventing any potential indiscriminate targeting of civilians or infrastructure, contrary to the allegations.

“NAF ensures strict due diligence before engaging any target, ensuring that only illegal refining sites and equipment are destroyed,” Akinboyewa added. “The safety of innocent civilians and the protection of critical infrastructure remain our top priority.”

He reassured the public of NAF’s continued commitment to safeguarding the nation’s critical infrastructure, tackling crude oil theft, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human life.
