Mexico Launches “Mexico Embraces You” Program to Support Potential Deportees as Trump Takes Office
As President Donald Trump took office on Monday, Mexico’s Interior Secretary, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, announced a new initiative called “Mexico Embraces You,” aimed at providing support to Mexican citizens who may face deportation from the United States under Trump’s immigration policies.
“Mexico will do everything necessary to defend, care for, and allocate resources to receive those who are repatriated, ensuring their reintegration into their native country,” Rodríguez said in a press briefing on Monday, underscoring the government’s commitment to assisting deported citizens.
Under the “Mexico Embraces You” plan, Mexico’s National Migration Institute will handle the reception and repatriation process, helping citizens return to their hometowns. As part of the program, deported Mexicans will receive 2,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $100) upon arrival to help with their transfer to their place of origin.
The initiative will also include support from the National Population Registry, which, similar to the U.S. Social Security system, will assist with the processing of identity documents if necessary.
Rodríguez revealed that the plan had been in development for months in anticipation of Trump’s mass deportation policies. The project has been coordinated in partnership with international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and UNICEF, to ensure the smooth reintegration of deported citizens.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her intention to reach out to the Trump administration after the inauguration, urging calm among Mexican nationals living in the U.S. She emphasized the importance of remaining composed during the uncertain period ahead.
The launch of the “Mexico Embraces You” program reflects Mexico’s proactive stance in preparing for the potential deportation of thousands of its citizens under Trump’s immigration policies, while also focusing on their successful reintegration into Mexican society.
