8 Days After Pardon, Ex-Convict Rearrested For Stealing TV In Osun

Just eight days after receiving a state pardon from Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, Sunday Omisakin, a middle-aged man, has been rearrested and remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly committing burglary and theft.

Omisakin, who was number eight on the list of pardon recipients on December 24, 2024, reportedly returned to a life of crime on January 3, 2025. He is accused of breaking into a house in the Iludun area of Osogbo, the state capital, and stealing a plasma television valued at N600,000.

According to a charge sheet obtained by our reporter on January 9, 2025, the allegations against Omisakin are as follows:

  • Count 1: “That you, Adebayo Omisakin Sunday (male), on the 3rd day of January 2025, at about 12:00 pm, at the Al-Medinat Area, Iludun, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did break and enter the house of one Shittu Damilare (male) and steal one plasma TV valued at N600,000.”
  • Count 2: “That you, Adebayo Omisakin Sunday (male), on the same date, time, and place, did steal one plasma TV valued at N600,000 from the property of Shittu Damilare.”

The charges brought against him are in violation of Sections 411 (1)(2), 383, and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Omisakin was initially arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osogbo on January 7, 2025, where he applied for bail. However, the presiding magistrate, A. Adeyeba, adjourned the case to January 10, 2025, for a ruling on the bail application. In his ruling, the magistrate ordered Omisakin’s remand at the Ilesa Correctional Centre while awaiting further proceedings.

This incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of the state pardon granted to criminals, particularly for those who reoffend shortly after their release. Omisakin’s case will now proceed to trial, with the public watching closely to see whether he will face additional charges or sentencing for his recent crimes.
