Kalu Urges UK Government to Support Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption War
Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has called on the United Kingdom (UK) government to strengthen its support for Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.
Kalu made the appeal during a speech at the event titled “UK-Nigeria Collaboration: A Parliamentary Strategic Dialogue”, held in London on Wednesday. The event was attended by notable figures, including the Deputy Leader of the British House of Lords, Rt. Hon. Lord Collins, as well as other members of parliament from both Nigeria and the UK.
In his address, Kalu emphasized the importance of bilateral collaboration in tackling corruption, among other significant challenges. He praised the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the UK, stressing the potential for even deeper economic and developmental ties between the two nations.
He stated: “The UK-Nigeria Strategic Partnership establishes a comprehensive framework for deepening bilateral relations and achieving shared objectives. This collaboration spans six key areas, including Growth and Jobs. Through the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP), both nations aim to foster mutual economic growth by addressing market barriers, boosting two-way trade, and promoting sustainable investments in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and energy.”
Strengthening Anti-Corruption Efforts
Kalu, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, specifically urged the UK government to intensify its efforts in supporting Nigeria’s battle against corruption in all its forms. One of the key aspects of this support, he noted, would be easing the process of repatriating illicit funds that are currently trapped within the UK financial system.
He further emphasized that the UK’s ongoing support for asset recovery and enhanced cooperation would be critical to the success of Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives. Kalu said: “Nigeria seeks the UK’s continued support in recovering illicit funds. We must focus on setting up mechanisms to curb illicit financial flows, strengthening anti-corruption institutions, and facilitating asset recovery processes through bilateral agreements.”
Collaboration on Constitutional Reforms
In addition to tackling corruption, Kalu called for UK support for Nigeria’s constitutional reform efforts. As Chair of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Kalu highlighted the importance of refining Nigeria’s constitutional framework to address the evolving needs of the nation, particularly in areas such as gender representation and security.
He urged the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to provide targeted technical assistance, research expertise, and capacity-building support to the Committee. This support, he stressed, would help ensure that the proposed constitutional reforms are evidence-based, comprehensive, and in line with international best practices.
Kalu pointed out key reform areas being considered, including the introduction of special status seats for women in legislative assemblies, the enactment of more gender-sensitive legislation, and the potential introduction of sub-national policing to improve security. These reforms, he noted, were essential for fostering inclusive governance, enhancing national security, and ensuring equitable representation for all citizens.
Kalu concluded: “Such support would not only strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions but also reinforce shared values of equity, justice, and security, which are central to the UK-Nigeria Strategic Partnership. This collaboration would demonstrate a deep commitment to empowering marginalized groups, creating safer communities, and strengthening Nigeria’s legislative framework for the future.”
Reaffirming UK-Nigeria Ties
The discussions at the event highlighted the growing synergy between the two countries, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing shared goals of economic growth, security, and governance reform. As Nigeria continues its fight against corruption and works to improve its constitutional and legal frameworks, the support from international partners like the UK is seen as crucial in driving meaningful change.
