Top Kano Official Returns N4.7 Million Mistakenly Credited to His Account
Alhaji Lamin Muktar Hassan, the Deputy Managing Director of the Kano State Refuse Management and Environmental Agency (REMASAB), has returned over N4.7 million that was mistakenly credited to his bank account by the state government.
Hassan initially thought the funds were part of his January 2025 salary. However, after reviewing the transaction, he realized the amount was significantly higher—more than 85% above his usual monthly salary.
Hassan, who was appointed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, had experienced delays in his salary payments in previous months, eventually receiving his arrears in December 2024. In January 2025, an incorrect payment of the same amount was credited to his account, but it did not reflect his actual salary for the month.
“I noticed the error because the payment matched the arrears from December and did not include my January salary,” Hassan explained. “I immediately reported the issue to the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General’s Office.”
After identifying the mistake, Hassan promptly returned the full amount and obtained a receipt, which he submitted to the Kano State Ministry of Finance as proof of the transaction.
Hassan emphasized that returning the funds was the right course of action. “At the time I returned the over N4.7 million, I had less than 10% of that amount left in my account and had not received my actual January salary,” he said.
As a proud indigene of Kano, Hassan expressed his sense of duty to ensure the funds were properly returned for the state’s use. “It’s important to me that the money is available for the proper purposes within the state,” he concluded.
