Kano Moves To Establish Security Outfit As Bill Passes Second Reading

The Kano State House of Assembly has moved a step closer to establishing a state security force with the passing of a Bill to create the Kano State Security Corps, which recently passed its second reading in the legislature.

The Bill, co-sponsored by Hon. Yusuf Aliyu (representing Nassarawa and Kiru State constituencies) and Hon. Usman Tasiu, aims to address increasing security challenges in the state. The second reading was introduced by Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Husseini, during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Following the session, Hon. Husseini spoke to journalists, outlining the purpose and scope of the proposed security corps. He emphasized that the outfit would complement the efforts of the conventional police force by helping to secure lives and properties and combat rising criminal activities in the state, such as phone snatching, thuggery, and the illegal sale of drugs.

“The establishment of this corps will significantly contribute to curbing these types of crimes,” he said. “It will assist the Police in maintaining law and order in the state.”

According to the Bill, once established, the security corps will have the authority to carry weapons, make arrests, and transfer suspects to the police for prosecution. The Corps will also operate with a clear hierarchy, including a commander-general who will oversee its operations, and a governing council composed of individuals with proven integrity, free from partisan politics.

This development is seen as a proactive step by the Kano State government to strengthen security in the face of growing concerns over public safety.
