NRC Insists Narrow-Gauge Rail Lines Are Operational Amid Workers’ Concerns
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has responded to recent media reports that suggested its narrow-gauge rail lines were inactive, clarifying that operations continue across several routes.
The statement came after concerns were raised about the condition and operational status of the narrow-gauge network, particularly related to challenges facing the railway services.
Yakub Mahmood, Deputy Director of Public Relations at NRC, issued a response emphasizing that the narrow-gauge services, including the western and eastern lines, are still operational.
“Trains are still running from Apapa and Ido to Ijoko daily as part of the Mass Transit Train Service (MTTS). We also freight containers from Apapa Port and transport cement from Ewekoro to Ibadan and Oshogbo,” Mahmood explained in the statement.
He also noted that the Port Harcourt to Aba mass transit train operates daily except on Mondays.
The NRC further reassured the public that the Federal Government remains committed to revitalising Nigeria’s railway infrastructure, including both standard and narrow-gauge lines, through ongoing investments.
Despite this assurance, there have been reports raising concerns from railway stakeholders about the limited operations on narrow-gauge routes and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades. The reports also pointed out operational challenges such as a shortage of locomotives, vandalism of rail tracks, and insufficient rolling stock, which have hindered the full use of the narrow-gauge lines.
Additionally, railway workers have voiced concerns over the non-payment of a 95% salary enhancement that was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. Workers have called for this issue to be prioritized under the new NRC Managing Director, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, who was recently appointed to lead the corporation. His appointment has raised hopes for prompt reforms and improvements in the railway sector.
While the NRC management works to assure the public of the functionality of the rail lines, the reported concerns emphasize the need for decisive leadership to address both operational challenges and workers’ welfare.
