Ugochukwu Madu, a US-based Nigerian health communication expert, has launched the GloCal Health Communication (GHC) Research Group in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. The new group aims to address global public health challenges by bridging the gap between global best practices and local implementation in health communication.

During the launch, Madu emphasized the importance of community engagement in health communication and highlighted the group’s mission to tackle critical health challenges through research, health campaigns, and by incorporating both global and local perspectives.

“At GHC, we are committed to bridging the gap between global best practices and local implementation in health communication research,” Madu stated, emphasizing the importance of community-based participatory research (CBPR). The approach prioritizes empowering communities as active collaborators in creating sustainable, meaningful change in health outcomes.

The group’s vision is to transform global healthcare practices by amplifying local voices and promoting health literacy, health promotion, and interdisciplinary collaboration. By focusing on reducing health disparities and ensuring inclusivity, the GHC aims to bring about positive change in public health communication globally.

Madu noted that the GHC has members from across the five continents, consisting of experts in health communication, public health, health misinformation, and community engagement. The group plans to work on securing grants, publishing research, and organizing academic and professional events.

Inviting health professionals to join, Madu said, “Together, we aim to transform health communication by amplifying local voices through health literacy, health promotion, and fostering collaboration across disciplines and geographies.”

The launch of the GHC Research Group marks an exciting new chapter in addressing global public health crises with innovative, community-driven health communication strategies.
