Oyo Gov’t Inaugurates Committee for Coronation of Alaafin
The Oyo State government has inaugurated the committee for the coronation ceremony of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the new Alaafin of Oyo. The event, aimed at marking the enthronement of the monarch, was set into motion on Monday with the first meeting presided over by Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
The committee comprises key members of the state cabinet, including Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, and Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. Also included are Hon. Ademola Ojo, and Prince Dotun Oyelade, along with other political figures from Oyo State.
The committee also has three state lawmakers from Oyo Constituency: Hon. Gbenga Oyekola (Atiba State Constituency), Hon. Rahman Olorunpoto (Oyo East/Oyo West Constituency), and Hon. Oladeji Oparinde (Afijio Constituency). The chairmen of the Oyo local government areas – Hon. Akeem Olukitibi (Oyo West), Hon. Wahab Adetunji (Atiba), Hon. Sola Oluokun (Oyo East), and Hon. Olufemi Aikomo (Afijio) – are also part of the planning process. In addition, seven family members of the new Alaafin, Oba Owoade, as well as religious leaders and other community stakeholders, are involved.
Hon. Ojo emphasized that the government is already making arrangements to ensure the coronation proceeds smoothly and in line with the traditional customs of the Oyo people. He recalled that, under Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership, the administration has successfully inaugurated 10 kings and 40 baales over the past five years.
Governor Makinde expects the full cooperation and dedication of all involved to ensure the success of the upcoming event, which is set to be a significant occasion in Oyo State’s history.
