Mexican Prison Riot Leaves Seven Dead

A prison riot in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco has left seven dead, according to authorities. The incident occurred in Villahermosa, the state capital, and has prompted an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office.

This riot, which is believed to have been sparked by a clash between rival criminal groups within the facility, follows a similar incident in December where seven people also lost their lives.

Tabasco, which is home to significant oil production facilities, has seen a rise in violent crime in recent months. In addition to the prison riot, two gun attacks on bars in Villahermosa in November and January resulted in a total of 13 fatalities.

Mexico’s ongoing battle with drug-related violence has claimed over 480,000 lives since 2006, when the government deployed the military to combat drug trafficking, according to official figures. The state continues to struggle with escalating criminal activity, especially in areas where the drug trade is particularly active.
