Houses, Livestock Destroyed as Fire Ravages Kano Village
A devastating fire has destroyed homes and claimed the lives of livestock in Danzago Village, located in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State. The incident occurred on Wednesday, causing significant damage to two families.
According to the Kano State Fire Service, the fire was first reported by one Abdurashid Sha’aibu at approximately 10:48 a.m.
Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, spokesperson for the fire service, confirmed that firefighters from the Danbatta Division arrived at the scene at around 11:22 a.m.
Abdullahi explained that the fire began by engulfing a large family compound at Gidan Ado Yubai, which spanned about 200 by 200 feet and contained 17 rooms, nine sides, and a storage facility. The fire resulted in the loss of two cows, 36 sheep, 17 goats, 10 chickens, and 19 local food storage units (Rumbu).
Despite the widespread damage, firefighters were able to save two sheep, four cows, two storage units, and various valuable items.
The flames then spread to another family compound, Gidan Ibrahim Mai Gariyo, which covered approximately 150 by 150 feet. This second compound suffered the destruction of several rooms, one food storage unit, and the loss of eight sheep and three goats. However, firefighters managed to salvage one storage unit and other goods, successfully containing the fire from spreading to neighboring properties.
Abdullahi noted that one firefighter sustained burn injuries to his leg while fighting the blaze, though fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
The fire service deployed teams from both the Danbatta and Dawanau stations due to the scale of the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
