Amaechi Dedicates Award to Wike for Completing Medical College of Rivers Varsity
Former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, has dedicated an award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for his role in completing the College of Medical Sciences at Rivers State University (RSU). Amaechi initiated the project during his tenure as governor of the state but was unable to complete it before leaving office in 2015.
Wike’s administration continued the project, with the College matriculating its first set of medical students in 2018. Amaechi made the dedication during an event in Port Harcourt on Thursday, where he also commended Wike for his commitment to completing the college.
The award, presented during the induction of the first set of medical graduates into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), recognized Amaechi’s contributions to educational development at RSU and his role in starting the College of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Fatima Kyari, Acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of MDCN, expressed gratitude to Amaechi for initiating the medical college, commending his efforts toward health sector renewal. She also reminded the newly inducted doctors that the ceremony marked the beginning of their medical careers.
The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences at RSU, Professor Chituru Orluwene, shared that out of the 50 medical students admitted in 2018, only two dropped out, and the remaining 48 achieved a 100% pass rate in their final exams. He praised the college for producing its first set of medical doctors within a record six years, without the delays often seen in medical training institutions in the country.
