Tinubu Inaugurates SEDC, NWDC Boards, Outlines Growth Agenda

In a significant move aimed at addressing regional disparities and fostering sustainable development, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the governing boards of the newly created South East and Northwest Development Commissions (SEDC and NWDC) in Abuja. This step marks a critical milestone toward promoting inclusive growth in the two regions.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, praised the commissions as transformative tools for harnessing the unique cultural, economic, and human resources of both regions. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his vision in establishing these commissions and to the National Assembly for the swift passage of the enabling legislation.

“These commissions will be instrumental in bridging regional gaps, driving economic growth, and improving the living standards of our people,” Momoh stated.

He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with state governments, the private sector, and development partners to ensure the success of the commissions.

The Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, added that the commissions would play a crucial role in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda by spearheading infrastructure projects that would stimulate economic activity and enhance the quality of life in the regions.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission, commended President Tinubu for his appointments and encouraged the commissions to focus on innovative development approaches.

“Building roads is no longer enough. The future is in railway stations, power plants, and cottage industries that create jobs,” Kalu remarked.

Senator Babagida Husseini, Chairman of the Senate Committee on North West Development Commission, assured the commissions of the Senate’s continued oversight role, vowing to ensure the effective use of funds allocated to the projects.

“We will monitor the budget, chase the money, and ensure that Nigerians get value for every naira spent,” Husseini said.

Dr. Emeka Wogu, Chairman of the SEDC Governing Board, expressed gratitude for the establishment of the commission and pledged to deliver high-impact projects that would benefit communities across the South East region.

“Our goal is to contribute to the region’s development through impactful, value-driven projects that create jobs,” Wogu said.

Lawal Samaila Abdullahi, Chairman of the NWDC Governing Board, underscored the importance of regional collaboration and partnerships in achieving coordinated development strategies for the Northwest.

Mark Okoye, Managing Director of SEDC, emphasized the historic significance of the commission’s creation and assured the public of its commitment to hard work and the successful delivery of impactful projects.

“We will repay this trust with results that make a difference in the lives of our people,” Okoye stated.

Prof. Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji, Managing Director of NWDC, outlined the commission’s mandate to harness the resources of the Northwest for economic growth and improved living conditions.

“Our mission is to stimulate economic growth, enhance infrastructure, and improve the quality of life for our citizens,” Ma’aji said.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to transparency, innovation, and impactful governance, as stakeholders called for stronger collaboration with development partners to realize the commissions’ full potential and foster sustainable growth in both regions.
