Reps Replace Late Onanuga With Ibrahim As New Deputy Chief Whip

On Tuesday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, officially announced the appointment of Hon. Isiaka Ayokunle Ibrahim (APC, Ogun) as the new Deputy Chief Whip of the House.

The announcement was made during the resumed plenary, with Speaker Abbas stating that Ibrahim’s appointment followed extensive consultations with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the South-West caucus in the House, and other key stakeholders.

Ibrahim succeeds the late Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who tragically passed away earlier this year.

“After extensive consultations with the APC leadership, the APC caucus, and other stakeholders from the South-West, the leadership of the House has accepted the recommendation of Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim to serve as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives,” Speaker Abbas said. “Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim succeeds our dear colleague, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who sadly passed away earlier this year. We congratulate Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim on this well-deserved elevation.”

Hon. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, passed away on January 15, 2025, leaving the Deputy Chief Whip position vacant.

Hon. Ibrahim, who represents the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was favored for the position, largely due to his connection to Ogun State, just as the late Onanuga had been. His appointment was seen as an effort to maintain regional representation in the House leadership.
