Minister’s Surprise Visit Uncovers 8-Month Power Outage at King’s College in Lagos

In a recent surprise visit to King’s College in Lagos, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, discovered a prolonged power outage that had affected the school for eight months. Upon his arrival at 7:30 am on Thursday, the Vice Principal, Shittu Y. S., informed the minister of the ongoing electricity problem, which had persisted since December 2024.

Shittu explained that the school’s generator had been in operation until it broke down by the end of the last term, leaving the school without power for the past eight months. He further revealed that the school had once benefited from the independent power project initiated by former Lagos State Governor, Raji Fashola, but that the initiative had been neglected by the federal government.

In an effort to cope with the power outage, the school had made temporary arrangements, including purchasing generators for classrooms and the dining hall, as well as installing an inverter in the hostel. Despite these efforts, the situation remained dire, with the Junior Secondary School annex in Victoria Island still having a regular power supply.

This revelation has raised concerns over the state of infrastructure in government schools, particularly in Lagos, and the need for urgent attention to such essential services. The minister’s visit highlighted the challenges schools face in maintaining basic facilities, despite previous efforts at improvement.
