7 Die, 40 Injured As Truck Suffers Brake Failure In Kano

Tragedy struck in Kano State on Thursday as a heavy-duty truck, carrying approximately 70 passengers and livestock, suffered brake failure and overturned beneath the Muhammadu Buhari Bridge in Nassarawa Local Government Area. The accident resulted in at least seven fatalities, with over 40 others sustaining various degrees of injury.

The truck, which was heading to Lagos State from Takai Local Government Area in Kano, lost control around midnight while navigating an underpass that connects to the Ring Road and Zaria highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck slipped inside the underpass after its brakes failed.

Shu’aibu Hamisu, a witness to the incident, described the horrifying scene, saying some victims were rescued but others tragically died on the spot. Among those confirmed dead was Baban Jummai, the son of Alhaji Saleh Karsha, the ward head of Karsha Gabas in Takai LGA. Alhaji Karsha visited the scene and identified five of the victims, including his own son.

The death toll has risen to seven, with more than 40 injured victims rushed to nearby hospitals, including Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital and Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police, and the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), arrived at the scene to assist with the rescue operation and evacuation of the injured.

This incident is not the first of its kind, as similar accidents involving trailers carrying livestock, food, and passengers have occurred at the same location in the past year.
