Adebanjo’s Legacy ‘ll Endure For Generations — Afenifere UK
The United Kingdom chapter of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its leader, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. The group emphasized that his legacy will continue to impact generations to come.
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP on Friday and signed by Prince Seyi Adefisan (Chairman), Prof. Seun Kolade (General Secretary), and Mrs. Bosede Adepoju (Steering Committee Member), Afenifere UK described Adebanjo as a towering statesman and an unwavering advocate for justice. They highlighted that his legacy is one marked by selfless service, unshakable integrity, and a steadfast commitment to democracy, equity, and true federalism.
“A fearless voice for the people, he stood firmly for the restructuring of the Nigerian nation-state, recognizing it as the most viable path to justice, unity, and sustainable development,” the statement read. Afenifere UK praised Adebanjo’s leadership as being driven not by personal interests but by the collective good of all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
The organization also lauded his personal virtues, calling him a mentor, guide, and beacon of wisdom whose words resonated with truth and conviction. They noted that Adebanjo’s leadership was marked by humility, discipline, and the courage to speak truth to power, even when it was unpopular.
“His passing is an immeasurable loss not only to the Afenifere family but to all who cherish democracy, justice, and the hope of a better Nigeria,” the statement added. “Though we grieve, we take solace in the rich legacy he leaves behind—a blueprint of courage, dedication, and principled leadership.”
Adebanjo, a former chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), passed away in Lagos on Friday at the age of 96.
