Adebanjo Will Be Remembered As Advocate of Progressive Nigeria — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the respected leader of Afenifere, who passed away on Friday at the age of 96. In a tribute, Shettima described Adebanjo as a tireless advocate for a more equitable and progressive Nigeria, whose life was marked by significant contributions to the country’s democratic journey.

Shettima, in a condolence message issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, highlighted Adebanjo’s long-standing dedication to Nigeria’s democratic process, beginning with his role as the Organising Secretary of the Action Group and continuing through his leadership in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the military era.

The Vice President acknowledged Adebanjo as “a living bridge that connected us to the foundational struggles of our democracy,” emphasizing the profound loss of both a leader and an institution. He praised Adebanjo for his unwavering voice for justice and fairness, which remained resolute until his passing.

“Pa Adebanjo was one of the greatest titans in Nigeria’s political history. His death marks the closing of an important chapter in our nation’s history, given the weight of his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution,” Shettima said.

Shettima extended his heartfelt condolences to Adebanjo’s family, particularly his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, and wished them strength to cope with the immense loss.

Adebanjo passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos State on February 14, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service and leadership. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
