JUST-IN: New Lagos Speaker Faces Pressure to Resign Amid DSS Invasion and Lawmaker Protests
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, is reportedly under intense pressure to step down, with sources suggesting she may resign as early as Monday.
This comes after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other armed security personnel stormed the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, raising tensions across the state on Monday.
Popular TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye also shared updates on the situation via his X (formerly Twitter) account earlier on Monday, writing: “Resignation Looms in Lagos! It’s a matter of hours.”
Videos captured by our correspondents showed the visibly emotional Speaker Meranda in tears, as members of the Assembly rallied in support, chanting “Meranda we want” in protest against the DSS invasion of the complex.
Meranda’s position has been uncertain since the return of Mudashiru Obasa, the previously impeached Speaker. Obasa has continued to challenge his removal, fueling division within the Assembly.
There are strong indications that Obasa could make a comeback as Speaker, especially after reports of intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
The political drama has left the Lagos State House of Assembly in turmoil, with observers eagerly awaiting developments in the coming hours.
