Tension in Lagos Assembly as DSS Operatives Clash with Legislative Workers
Lawmakers Hold Sitting Amid Tight Security
A tense standoff unfolded inside the Lagos State House of Assembly building on Monday when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) clashed with legislative workers, creating chaos at the complex.
Videos captured by our correspondent showed DSS officials, dressed in black jackets and helmets, armed with weapons, forcefully engaging with Assembly staff at the entrance to the chamber. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a heated struggle between the two sides.
“The situation was intense; we were just trying to go about our normal duties when the DSS officials stormed in,” said one legislative worker who wished to remain anonymous. “They were aggressive, and it was clear they were not here for a friendly visit.”
Reports indicated that the DSS operatives were attempting to restrict access to certain individuals within the Assembly, though the exact motive behind their actions remained unclear. The altercation caused panic, with some staff members seen fleeing the premises to avoid the escalating chaos.
A senior House official, who also spoke anonymously, condemned the DSS’ approach, stating, “This is a legislative house, a symbol of democracy. Such actions undermine the integrity of this institution.”
At the time of writing, attempts to obtain an official statement from the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly were unsuccessful. However, sources suggested that emergency meetings were being held to address the situation and prevent further escalation.
Political analysts have voiced concerns over the increasing involvement of security operatives in legislative affairs, warning that such incidents pose a threat to democratic governance.
Despite the earlier disruption, the House members eventually convened for their plenary session, during which they passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Meranda and adjourned indefinitely.
