Multiple Casualties as NAF Targets Terrorists’ Camps in Katsina

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully neutralized several terrorists and destroyed their camps in Katsina State, according to reports. However, controversy surrounding the operation has sparked concerns about potential civilian casualties. In response, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the airstrike.

NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, provided details of the operation in a statement, confirming that the Air Component of Operation FASAN YANMA (AC OFY) carried out a precision airstrike on February 15, 2025, targeting terrorists at Yauni Hill in Zakka Ward, within Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Akinboyewa stated that the strike successfully neutralized multiple bandits and played a crucial role in repelling an attack against personnel from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Katsina State Community Watch Corps. The airstrike followed intelligence reports about an imminent terrorist assault on a PMF base, where two PMF officers and four vigilantes had been killed by the bandits.

“The terrorists were confirmed to be hiding in the nearby Yauni Hill. In a rapid response, NAF air assets were deployed for an interdiction mission. Upon reaching the site, the identified targets were engaged,” Akinboyewa explained.

However, reports of civilian casualties in the wake of the airstrike have raised concerns. Akinboyewa addressed these claims, stressing that while the allegations are troubling, they remain unverified until a full investigation is conducted.

“The NAF takes these concerns seriously and is fully committed to uncovering the truth. It’s important to note that these allegations are just that—allegations—until a detailed investigation is completed,” he said.

He emphasized that the NAF, as a professional military force, operates under strict rules of engagement and abides by internationally recognized standards in all of its missions. The NAF’s guiding principles ensure that the protection of Nigerian citizens is always a top priority.

In light of the ongoing allegations, Air Marshal Abubakar has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the facts and take appropriate action based on the findings.

Akinboyewa urged the public to remain calm as the investigation progresses and reassured citizens of NAF’s continued dedication to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives.
