Police Bust Armed Cult Gang, Arrest 3 In Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully dismantled a dangerous gang of armed cultists involved in kidnapping, robbery, and other violent crimes, arresting three suspects in the process.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, Timfon John, revealed that the operation followed intelligence gathered from residents, including a retired military officer.
John explained that the tip-off led to the arrest of three individuals in Akpautong Village, located in the Ibesikpo Asutan local government area, adding that dangerous weapons and stolen items were also recovered.
On February 17, 2025, at around 7:20 a.m., a retired Staff Sergeant of the Nigerian Army reported that he was awoken by gunfire at 1:20 a.m. When he went outside, he saw Kingsley Samuel, also known as “Bobby,” leading a group of armed men. The gang had broken into his son’s room, held him at gunpoint, and stolen ₦100,000.
The police identified other suspects in the case as Saviour Ime Philip (alias “Ibia”), Benjamin Joseph Asuquo (alias “Big Guy”), and Simon Monday Ekong, among others who will be identified upon sight.
In another incident on February 16, 2025, a man from Akpambiet Village reported being attacked during a ceremony in Akpautong Village. The suspects, led by Kingsley Samuel, falsely accused him of owing money to their friend, and they forced him to withdraw ₦206,000 at gunpoint, along with an additional ₦10,000 extortion.
Acting on the intelligence gathered, a surveillance team quickly intercepted the fleeing suspects as they attempted to escape on motorcycles and a tricycle. Three suspects were arrested, while others managed to escape.
The police recovered two cut-size shotguns, eight machetes, one tricycle, one motorcycle, one generator, assorted charms, various food items, and a television set from the suspects.
The PPRO indicated that the suspects are believed to be part of a notorious gang involved in similar criminal activities in neighboring local government areas. The state police command is continuing efforts to arrest the remaining members of the gang.
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, CP Baba Azare, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to eliminating criminal groups and ensuring the safety of citizens, assuring residents that the fight against crime will continue with full force.
