Tinubu Set to Unveil Lagos-Badagry Expressway in May, According to Umahi
Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, has announced that the rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a six-lane highway is expected to be completed by April.
Umahi made this statement during an inspection of the ongoing project on Thursday, revealing that the 46-kilometer stretch—part of the ECOWAS Road leading to the Seme Border and Abidjan—will be ready for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu in May to mark his second year in office.
The minister further disclosed that the contractor handling the project has already been paid ₦50 billion out of the total ₦71 billion contract sum, with the remaining balance set aside for the final stages of the work.
“The contractor has been paid ₦50 billion, which means only ₦21 billion is left to complete the project,” Umahi explained. “We have scheduled a meeting with the contractor to discuss how to finalize the remaining four to five kilometers before April 20.”
Additionally, Umahi highlighted that the second section of the road, which leads to the Seme Border, will be finished with concrete pavement. He also mentioned that there would be proposals for the Border States to complete their respective sections of the ECOWAS highway project extending to Abidjan.
The Minister of Works praised President Tinubu for focusing on about 270 inherited infrastructure projects nationwide, with several of them slated for inauguration in May.
The Lagos-Badagry Expressway project, originally awarded in October 2018, is seen as a key development for improving transportation and trade in the region.
