Federal Government Approves Relocation of 29 Custodial Centres

Unveils Bullet-Resistant Guard Booths and Vehicles for Prisons

The Federal Government has given approval for the relocation of 29 out of Nigeria’s 256 Custodial Centres due to the rapid growth of urban areas.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this announcement on Friday in Abuja during the commissioning of 39 mini-Green Maria vehicles for transporting inmates to and from court, along with five bullet-resistant guard booths at the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) headquarters.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo explained that paramilitary careers are not merely poverty alleviation schemes but are essential, serious professional paths. He added that a new paramilitary academy is being established to nurture young talent for careers within the Service.

“Regarding the relocation of our correctional centres, the President has graciously approved the movement of approximately 29 Custodial Centres. The process has already begun, and we are committed to completing it,” the Minister stated.

He went on to explain that the new academy, which is modeled after institutions like the Police Academy and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), will offer degree programs to prepare young Nigerians for long-term careers in paramilitary roles.

“The goal is to catch them young,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo remarked, noting that some custodial facilities are currently located near state government houses, markets, or residential areas, which necessitates their relocation.

The Minister also unveiled five Bullet-Resistant Guard-booths placed at strategic locations, including the NCoS national headquarters in Abuja, the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, and Maximum Security Custodial Centres in Port Harcourt, Kano, and Lagos. These booths, designed to withstand high-level threats such as 12.7mm ammunition, will enhance security at these facilities.

The newly commissioned vehicles and guard booths are part of NCoS’ broader efforts to tackle challenges related to inmate transportation and security, particularly for Awaiting Trial Persons (ATPs).

According to data from February 17, 2025, the total population of inmates stood at 80,066, with 66% (53,225) being pre-trial detainees. This underscores the ongoing need for secure and efficient transport solutions to court.
