Police Call for Immediate Suspension of Osun LG Elections
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the local government elections in Osun State, scheduled for Saturday, February 22. The Force cited credible intelligence suggesting a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats in the state.
According to a statement released on Friday night by Force Public Relations Officer (PRO) ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, joint intelligence reports have revealed that various groups, including political factions and other interest parties, were mobilizing efforts to incite unrest and disrupt public peace, posing a major threat to the democratic process.
Given the potential for widespread violence, the NPF strongly advised the Osun State government to suspend the elections in the interest of public safety and national stability. The police have assessed the security situation and determined that proceeding with the elections under the current volatile conditions could lead to widespread unrest, jeopardizing lives and property.
ACP Adejobi emphasized that the NPF, along with other security agencies, is prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order. However, he stressed that suspending the elections would help avoid unnecessary confrontation and ensure the safety of all stakeholders involved in the process.
In addition to the security concerns, the police also referenced a recent legal opinion from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice regarding judicial decisions affecting local government administration in Osun State. The Court of Appeal ruling delivered on February 10, 2025, had nullified a prior Federal High Court decision and reinforced the legal argument that the elections, as currently planned, lack a solid legal foundation.
In light of the heightened security threats and the legal uncertainties, the NPF urged the Osun State government to reconsider and immediately suspend the planned elections. The Police Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes remain intact and lawful.
