Policeman Turned Tricyclist Faces Sanctions For Brandishing Gun During Altercation With Passengers

The Ebonyi State Police Command has initiated disciplinary action against one of its officers who engaged in a public altercation with passengers while operating a tricycle business, during which he brandished his service rifle. The incident, which was captured in a viral video, has attracted widespread condemnation from residents of Abakaliki, the state capital, and social media users.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, issued a statement condemning the officer’s actions as a clear violation of the Nigeria Police Force’s ethics and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). He confirmed that the officer involved had been identified, and an investigation had been launched. Disciplinary actions have already been taken against the officer.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Police Command, CP Anthonia Adaku Uche-Anya, assures residents of Ebonyi State that the Command has zero tolerance for indiscipline and unprofessional conduct from its officers, and they will be held accountable for their actions,” the statement noted.

In light of the incident, some residents of Abakaliki have urged the police commissioner to prohibit officers from carrying firearms while engaging in other business activities. Human rights activist Comrade Chukwuma Egwu also expressed concern over the growing number of officers involved in side businesses like operating motorcycles (“Okada”) and tricycles (“Keke”), often while carrying weapons.

Egwu pointed out that some officers not only carry rifles but also engage in drinking sessions at night, with their weapons visible at drinking joints. He called on the police commissioner to create a taskforce to ensure that officers do not carry arms while off duty or engaged in other activities like transportation.

Egwu stressed the danger of such conduct, citing the potential for accidental discharge and the need for officers to leave their firearms at the station when engaging in personal businesses or leisure activities. He emphasized that it is crucial to regulate officers’ behavior to prevent unnecessary risks.
