Court Stops Zamfara Assembly From Sacking Minority Leader

The Federal High Court in Gusau, Zamfara State, has issued an interim injunction restraining the Zamfara State House of Assembly from sacking the Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hon. Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South State Constituency, is challenging the decision of the state Assembly leadership to remove him. The suit, identified as No: FHC/GSCS/10/2025, lists the House of Assembly, the Speaker, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, Justice Salim Olasupo Ibrahim granted the interim injunction, which also prevents INEC from conducting a by-election for the Talata Mafara South constituency, currently held by Kagara.

Justice Olasupo ordered that the status quo be maintained until the court hears the motion on notice and the substantive suit. The case has been adjourned to March 12, 2025.

This legal action follows a series of suspensions of members in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, including nine members from different parties. These suspensions have caused a reduction in the Assembly’s effective membership, hindering its ability to meet the two-thirds majority required for passing legislation.
