Pope Calls For Gaza ‘Genocide’ Investigation
Pope Francis has called for an investigation into whether Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide. In excerpts from his upcoming book, “Hope Never Disappoints. Pilgrims Towards a Better World,” the Pope stated that some experts believe the situation in Gaza exhibits traits of genocide. He urged a thorough examination to determine if Israel’s actions meet the legal definition used by international bodies.
This is the first time Pope Francis has publicly referenced “genocide” in connection with Israeli military operations in Gaza, although he has consistently condemned the high number of civilian casualties. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports that at least 43,846 people have been killed, the majority of them civilians.
In response, Israel’s embassy to the Vatican rejected the accusation, asserting that the real genocide occurred during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths. Israel maintains that its actions are a legitimate response to ongoing threats to its citizens.
The Pope has also advocated for peace and the return of hostages taken during the October 7 attack. His call for an investigation is part of a broader international conversation regarding Israel’s conduct, with some organizations accusing Israel of committing genocide.
