ECOWAS Council of Ministers Holds 93rd Ordinary Session in Abuja

The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened its 93rd ordinary session on Thursday at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja. Chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the session focused on critical governance, economic policies, and regional integration issues facing the West African bloc.

In his opening address, ECOWAS President Omar Touray commended Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the people of Nigeria for their continued support of the regional organization. He highlighted the timely nature of the session, given the persistent challenges confronting the region.

Touray informed the Council that the session would address 30 specific agendas, covering key areas such as trade, security, agriculture, and regional stability. He also expressed concern over a decline in community remittances, noting that only 40 percent of remittances had been received from member states over the past six years.

Additionally, Touray praised the peaceful elections held earlier this year in Liberia, Senegal, Togo, and Ghana, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peaceful democracy across the region.

He called on member states to reaffirm their commitment to the values and objectives of ECOWAS, particularly in promoting stability and development across West Africa.
