Trump Makes History, Rings Opening Bell At NYSE

United States President-elect, Donald Trump, made history on Thursday by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for the first time. This ceremonial moment coincided with Trump being named TIME Magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year, a title he previously received in 2016.

Trump, joined by his wife Melania, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, and Vice President-elect JD Vance, described the occasion as “a tremendous honor.” The crowd at the NYSE cheered, chanting “USA,” as Trump raised his fist to open the trading day.

The TIME recognition marks a significant moment in Trump’s political resurgence, as he transformed from a former president who refused to concede his 2020 election loss to reclaiming the White House in November. TIME’s editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, praised Trump’s comeback, stating, “This is someone who made a historic comeback, reshaped the American presidency, and is reordering American politics. It’s hard to argue that anyone else had more influence on the news in 2024.”

Trump reflected on the recognition, humorously saying, “I think I like it better this time, actually.” In a TIME interview, he attributed his campaign success to what he called “72 Days of Fury,” stating, “We hit the nerve of the country. The country was angry.”

During his remarks at the NYSE, Trump outlined key policies for his upcoming administration, including the nomination of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and plans for expedited federal permits for major projects. He also hinted at significant government cuts, saying, “We’re going to be doing the same thing, I can tell you. Unfortunately, there’s too many of them.”

Trump also used the platform to reiterate his plans to pardon many individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot. He vowed to begin the pardons “in the first hour,” possibly “the first nine minutes” of his presidency. Additionally, he affirmed his commitment to mass deportations, planning to leverage the military, while noting that he would act within the limits of the law.

Regarding the ongoing Gaza conflict, Trump expressed a desire to end the war but voiced skepticism toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying, “I don’t trust anybody.”

As Trump rang the opening bell, a TIME magazine cover featuring him was projected on the NYSE wall, flanked by American flags. His favorite walk-on song, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” played as he stood with his family and members of his administration. After the ceremony, Trump toured the trading floor, shaking hands with traders.

This marked Trump’s second time as TIME‘s Person of the Year, following his first win in 2016. He was chosen over other notable finalists, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Princess Kate of Wales. Sam Jacobs noted that while the selection often sparks debate, “this year was an easier decision than years past.”
