Experts Urge Nigerians to Prioritize Hygiene and Precautionary Measures Amid Rising HMPV Infections Worldwide

As global concerns rise over respiratory infections, including an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), public health experts are calling on Nigerians to adopt stringent hygiene practices and other precautionary measures to curb the spread of the virus.

This call follows reports of HMPV outbreaks in China and a seasonal spike in respiratory illnesses across the world.

Tropical disease expert, Prof. Wellington Oyibo, emphasized the importance of personal protection, particularly for travelers, to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. In an interview with LEADERSHIP, he advised, “Travelers must wear their masks and protect themselves. Maintaining hygiene and using proper masks are crucial steps in safeguarding one’s health.”

Although HMPV is not as deadly as COVID-19, Oyibo warned that it is highly contagious and could lead to severe complications for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Renowned virologist Prof. Oyewale Tomori also expressed concerns about Nigeria’s public health preparedness. Speaking to Corruptionreporter, he criticized the country’s inconsistent approach to disease prevention and monitoring. “We lack sustained preparedness. Every time an epidemic emerges, it feels like we are starting from scratch. This reactive approach leaves us unprepared for outbreaks like HMPV or recurring diseases such as Lassa fever,” he said.

Tomori also lamented the underutilization of laboratories and health infrastructure built during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of which are no longer in use. “Instead of maintaining these facilities, we let them decay. When the next crisis strikes, we’re forced to start from zero with temporary, unsustainable solutions,” he explained.

HMPV, first discovered in 2001, is a member of the Pneumoviridae family and causes respiratory infections. Symptoms include fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. While it is mild in most cases, HMPV can cause severe complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, with an incubation period of three to six days.

Hospitals in China have reportedly been overwhelmed by cases, and there are growing concerns about a mix of circulating viruses, including influenza A and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. While no official state of emergency has been declared, public health experts are urging increased vigilance and strict adherence to preventive measures.

The experts emphasized the importance of public health education and proactive measures to mitigate the risks. Simple actions such as washing hands regularly with soap and water, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and self-isolating when feeling unwell can significantly reduce the spread of respiratory infections.

“As the flu season is in full swing, we must prioritize preventive care,” said Oyibo. “Consistent hygiene practices and mask-wearing, especially in crowded places, can save lives.”

These warnings come at a crucial time, reminding Nigerians of the importance of taking personal responsibility for their health and urging authorities to strengthen national preparedness for HMPV and other potential outbreaks.
