Akwa Ibom Launches Demolition of Criminal Hideouts in Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State government has initiated a crackdown on criminal hideouts in Uyo, the state capital, by demolishing several shanties that were being used by petty thieves and scrap dealers who have been vandalizing public assets and utilities.

One of the key operations led by the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) targeted a notorious scrap market in Nung Oku Ibesikpo, which had gained a reputation as a sanctuary for criminals and hoodlums who terrorized various parts of the city.

Hon. Anietie Eka, Chairman of UCCDA, stated that the operation was necessary to restore order, enhance security, and improve the aesthetics of Uyo. The government is committed to ensuring that the state capital becomes safer, more organized, and cleaner.

Residents had long expressed concerns about the scrap market, claiming it was a hotspot for criminal activities such as theft, the sale of stolen goods, and illicit substances. They also pointed out that the area, which was originally designated as a motor park, had been illegally converted into a dumpsite and scrap market.

Hon. Eka emphasized that the dismantling of the illegal market was in line with Governor Umo Eno’s vision for a more organized Uyo. He also issued a warning that similar actions would be taken against other illegal markets and structures contributing to urban disorder.

“We cannot allow criminality to thrive under the guise of economic activities. This exercise is in the best interest of law-abiding citizens who deserve a clean and secure environment,” Eka said.

In addition to the demolition of the scrap market, the taskforce also cleared areas such as Nung Oku Junction, Mbierebe Junction, and Plaza, where roadside traders were removed from the streets, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve security.

The community has expressed support for the action, with Chief Okon Edem, a local leader, stating, “As the citywide cleanup continues, we are hopeful that the initiative will bring lasting positive change to the state capital. We are therefore urging residents to cooperate with UCCDA in building a city everyone can be proud of.”
