Governors Meet in Abuja Over Tax Bills, Other Issues

Members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) held an in-person meeting at the Forum’s Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday night, with 15 governors, mainly from the All Progressives Congress (APC), in attendance. Notably, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State (Labour Party) and Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State (All Progressives Grand Alliance) were the only opposition governors present.

While the meeting’s agenda was not disclosed to journalists, one of the key issues likely discussed was the controversial tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly. These bills have faced widespread criticism, especially from governors. The 36 state governors under the National Economic Council (NEC) have expressed concerns over the proposed reforms. Additionally, the 19 northern governors have strongly opposed certain sections of the bills, calling for their withdrawal from the National Assembly.
