Natasha Recall: Electoral College Tasks INEC on Transparency

The Nigerian Electoral College has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the recall process for the suspended senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, adheres to the established guidelines.

INEC had notified Akpoti-Uduaghan on Wednesday about the commencement of the recall procedure, referencing the petition filed by representatives of registered voters in her constituency. The letter read, “Pursuant to Section 69 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I write to notify you of the receipt of a petition from representatives of registered voters in your constituency seeking your recall from the Senate.”

The letter also emphasized that the notification was in line with the provisions of Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024.

In a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Electoral College, Kunle Lawal, the organization urged INEC to ensure that the process is conducted transparently and fairly. The group cautioned that any attempt to undermine or politicize the recall process could damage the integrity of democratic institutions.

“We urge INEC to carry out this process with transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to its guidelines, ensuring that the will of the people is not manipulated,” the statement read. The Electoral College also warned that any attempts to short-circuit or politicize the recall process would undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The organization emphasized its non-partisan stance, asserting that it does not take sides in political contests but remains committed to educating Nigerians about their rights and responsibilities. It called on all stakeholders to respect the legal framework and allow the process to proceed without interference.
