Kano Government Calls on Tinubu to Remove Emir Bayero From Nasarawa Palace
The Kano State government has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa Palace, claiming that his continued presence is escalating unrest in the state.
During a distribution of relief materials at the Kano Government House, facilitated by Hon. Kabiru Dahiru Sule, the Representative for Tarauni Federal Constituency, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo reiterated the state’s position, urging President Tinubu to take immediate action.
“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the Emir he appointed and placed in a graveyard,” Gwarzo said, referencing the Nasarawa mini-palace, where deceased Kano Emirs are traditionally laid to rest.
The deputy governor also condemned the heavy presence of security forces around the palace and various parts of Kano city. He accused the security personnel of using teargas and, in some cases, live ammunition against peaceful protesters.
“The people of Kano, especially the youth, are fed up with this situation. It is shocking that, in a democratic society, security forces are deployed to fire teargas at peaceful protesters, with some reports alleging the use of live ammunition,” Gwarzo added. “However, we want to make it clear that no one will be intimidated. This is a democracy, and democracy must be respected, regardless of whether some individuals like it. We stand firmly with the youth who have taken to the streets to express their grievances.”
Gwarzo emphasized that only Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has the constitutional right to appoint an Emir in the Kano Emirate.
“The president should remove the emir he appointed and send him back to his home state. Kano already has an Emir, and that is Muhammadu Sanusi II. No one else has the authority to impose an Emir on Kano,” he declared.
He also accused certain individuals of exploiting Emir Bayero’s position at the Nasarawa Palace to sow political instability, which he claimed was obstructing the state government’s ability to operate effectively.
The deputy governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, highlighting that the same legal process that led to Bayero’s initial appointment had also reinstated Sanusi II as the rightful Emir.
LEADERSHIP reported that, in response to intelligence about a planned protest near the Nasarawa mini-palace, security forces sealed off access to the area on Wednesday, resulting in traffic congestion. The police also arrested 17 suspected thugs in connection with the unrest, and investigations are ongoing.
