Efforts Ongoing To Free Nnamdi Kanu From Detention — Kalu
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has confirmed that strong efforts are underway to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), from detention.
Kalu made this statement on Thursday during a meeting with the South-East Legislators Forum, which consists of lawmakers from the five State Houses of Assembly in the South-East region. The forum, led by the Majority Leader of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker’s office.
According to a statement from Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker emphasized that significant efforts are being made behind the scenes with relevant authorities to secure Kanu’s release. He expressed optimism, stating, “I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers.”
Kalu also used the occasion to advocate for unity and cooperation among political leaders in the South-East. He praised the state lawmakers for their interest in the ongoing constitutional amendment process, urging them to lend their full support to the exercise. Additionally, he called for their support for the newly established South-East Development Commission (SEDC) in achieving its goals.
He encouraged the legislators to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the government has good intentions for both the South-East region and the entire country.
Highlighting the importance of unity, Kalu stressed, “The power of networking is more than money. Unity is power. We hardly recognize our own and we lose a lot of things because of it. We need to end the sit-at-home; people are destroying themselves. We need to come together.”
Kalu also commended the legislators for leaving their respective state assemblies to visit the Federal House, emphasizing that this exposure would enhance their legislative activities and improve their ability to speak knowledgeably.
Regarding the ongoing constitutional amendment process, Kalu encouraged the South-East lawmakers to actively participate in the upcoming zonal public hearings, which are expected to begin in the first or second quarter of next year. He urged them to develop a common legislative agenda for the region and focus on areas such as security, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and technology.
Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, the leader of the delegation, expressed solidarity with Kalu, pledging the South-East legislators’ support as he is seen as the political leader of the region.
